The 7 Sinners

If there is a golden thread throughout the more than 25 years of Helloween‘s history, 13 studio albums, countless headliner tours around the globe and more than 5 million records sold, then it is their special kind of attitude: don’t take yourself too seriously and simply live statements like “just have fun with the shit you’re doing.” Maybe it is exactly this easiness that allows Helloween to be one of the most constant bands of the genre while simultaneously being the one band who dares to experiment more than their musical peers.
The Band
While some copycats would rather stick with the same old patterns, Andi Deris, Michael Weikath, Sascha Gerstner, Markus Großkopf and Dani Löble aren’t afraid of taking risks — and are rightfully rewarded with success.

“7 Sinners” is definitively one of the fastest and hardest albums in the Helloween‘s history and it bursts with vitality. That might partly be due to the versatility of the various songwriters within the band, who over time have become so homogenous, that the 13 songs formed a unity on their own in the studio , but it may also be due to the fact that the album was recorded completely without a click track, which, considering the extreme speed of the songs is an impressive feat. Especially drummer Löble, who proves that his technique is at a world-class-level. Following his excellent inner clock, bass and drums drive tracks like “Are You Metal?”, “Long Live The King” and “Who Is Mr. Madman?” to dizzying tempos. “7 Sinners”, with its typically strong melodies and the tangible joy of playing, is a true metal album whose range reaches astonishing dimensions.

It has become a cliche for metal band’s to tout their newest opus as their “fastest” or “heaviest” album ever made, but in Helloweens case, “7 Sinners” is truly a return to form and is indeed their fastest and heaviest release in years. Helloween bass player Markus Grosskopf stated about the band’s new material: “For all those out there who found our special best-of [CD] ‘Unarmed’ to be too smooth and calm, I have great news: The new album will hit you right in the face! It’s gonna be very heavy and contain all [the classic] HELLOWEEN trademarks! Some songs are very powerful and hymnic, others contain the fastest bass-drum patterns our drummer Dani ever played, and this means a lot!”

The line-up around singer Andi Deris, guitarist Sascha Gerstner, drummer Dani Löble, as well as the two founding members, guitarist Michael Weikath and bassist Markus Grosskopf, is more than intact and the countless tours and festivals boosted the bands self-confidence, which clearly becomes apparent in the new songs.

Helloween recently entered Andi Deris´ Mi Sueno Studios on Tenerife to start working on the yet untitled 13th full length studio album. The band wrote more than 20 Songs and is currently selecting the best ideas with long time producer Charlie Bauerfeind.

Bass player Markus Grosskopf comments the direction of the album as follows: “For all those out there who found our special best-of UNARMED to be too smooth and calm, I have a great news: The new album will hit you right in the face! It´s gonna be very heavy and contain all Helloween trademarks! Some songs are very powerful and hymnic, others contain the fastest bass drum patterns our drummer Dani (Loeble) ever played, and this means a lot! I am really excited about the material we brought together and can´t wait to put my bass tracks on those kick ass metal songs!”

The release of the album is scheduled for Halloween, October 31st, followed by a world tour starting in Europe the end of the year.

New Dr. Stein Video

In anticipation of the release of the Unarmed – Best Of 25th Anniversary album, Helloween have shot a video for the re-recorded version of their former Top 10 single ‘Dr. Stein’. It will premiere on January 8th, more details will be revealed soon.

25th Anniversary best-of Unarmed

25th Anniversary best-of Unarmed

Helloween, one of the most eminent melodic metal bands worldwide and – along with the Scorpions and Accept – Germany’s ultimate metal export, got together exactly 25 years ago. A total of eleven headlining world tours took the band all over the globe, and their sensational show at the Monsters Of Rock in Castle Donington in front of more than 100,000 metalheads and spectacular tours alongside Iron Maiden, Dio and Ozzy Osbourne as well as their MTV Headbangers Ball US tour with Anthrax and Exodus remain unforgotten. Helloween have sold more than five million records and garnered 14 gold and 6 platinum awards globally, receiving two gold records in Germany only. Thus: no exaggeration to say that without them, many contemporary acts such as Edguy, Sonata Arctica and Blind Guardian etc. would not be around in their current form. For 25 years, Helloween have shot their riffs and hooks from the hip and doubtlessly count among the most ingenious international metal acts. At the same time, it’s mainly their fantastic and extremely haunting melodies which their fans love. Now Andi Deris (vocals), Michael Weikath (guitar), Sascha Gerstner (guitar), Markus Großkopf (bass) and Daniel Löble (drums) have set out to prove that their great anthems ooze that special Helloween flair even with totally new arrangements: February 1st, 2010 will see the band unleash a stunning best-of album, entitled UNARMED – Best-Of 25th Anniversary, which is set to raise the musical benchmark!

UNARMED – Best-Of 25th Anniversary is Helloween’s ‘thank-you’ to millions of fans old and new and will prove their exceptional position on the international metal scene. Instead of putting together a regular greatest hits compilation featuring their most successful tracks to celebrate this anniversary, the five band members completely rearranged the greatest melodies they had written in the course of their career to date. The result is an offering which was lavishly produced under the auspices of their tried and tested producer, Charlie Bauerfeind, and recorded with the support of a number of first-rate guest musicians: together with percussion virtuoso Nippy Noya, Fury in the Slaughterhouse accordion player Gero Drnek, as well as German rock icon Peter Maffay’s guitarist Andreas Becker, UNARMED – Best-Of 25th Anniversary features Supercharge’s exceptional saxophonist Albie Donnelly, Hellsongs’s vocalist Harriet Ohlsson, pianist Matthias Ulmer, plus the 70-piece Prague Symphonic Orchestra and the choirs of the Gregorian singers!

“People have come to know us for our phat ENGL, Mesa Boogie and Marshall amps; our distorted guitars are our most deadly weapon,” vocalist Andi Deris explains. “This time, however, some listeners will probably find themselves slapping their foreheads when they suddenly, after an unfamiliar beginning, realise which song it is that they have been listening to.” At the same time, Helloween have fully explored the limits of what is possible: the catchy “Eagle Fly Free” for example is a tender ballad, presented as a duet between Deris and Harriet Ohlsson, supported by a wonderful e-bow guitar solo, “A Tale That Wasn’t Right” has turned into a melancholic, touching orchestral version, “If I Could Fly” and “Fallin To Pieces” are presented in a mellow pop guise with lounge music tendencies, and “Dr. Stein” had been transformed into a ska version with an entire horn section.

As a special surprise, Helloween have come up with “The Keeper´s Trilogy” an awesome 17-minute medley of the songs “Halloween”, “Keeper Of The Seven Keys” and “The King For A 1000 Years”, recorded in cooperation with the Prague Symphonic Orchestra and likely to send shivers of delight down the spine of every Helloween fan.

UNARMED – Best-Of 25th Anniversary sees Helloween commemorate their 25th anniversary in their very own way. “We aren’t one of those bands who like to celebrate themselves,” says Weikath. “We wanted to say thank you in a special way to all our fans who have followed us through the past 25 years – to us, this album stands for an official celebration. We had a lot of fun recording our most important tracks in an entirely new ‘outfit’ and with new arrangements. Now we can’t wait to find out how our fans will react.”

Helloween 25th Anniversary“Hello to all Pumpkin Maniacs!

We deeply apologize for the weeks of silence – which were weeks of insecurity for us – about the bands European label situation and the release date of the long awaited Unarmed – Best Of 25th Anniversary album.

Thus we are proud to finally announce that we have teamed up with Sony Music in co-op with SPV, to release our upcoming records!

We also want to use this opportunity to welcome the highly motivated team of Sony Music in the world of Helloween and it’s fans!

Release dates for Unarmed – Best Of 25th Anniversary:

December 16th – Japan & Southeast Asia (JVC/Victor)
January 29th – Europe (Sony/SPV)

The release dates for the American continent will be announced soon

Unarmed – Best Of 25th Anniversary is a big ‘thank-you’ to all our fans, old and new all over the world! Instead of putting together a regular greatest hits compilation featuring our most successful tracks to celebrate this anniversary, we completely rearranged and re-recorded the greatest songs and melodies of our career.

Together with our tried and tested producer, Charlie Bauerfeind, we invited many great musicians to guest on this special record, with the doubtless highlight of having the 70-piece Prague Symphonic Orchestra performing “The Keeper’s Trilogy”, a 17 minute medley consisting of the songs “Halloween”, “Keeper Of The Seven Keys” and “The King for A 1000 Years” – goose bumps guaranteed!

Here’s a list of all songs we recorded:

“Dr. Stein”
“Future World”
“If I Could Fly”
“Where The Rain Grows”
“The Keeper’s Trilogy”
“Eagle Fly Free”
“Perfect Gentleman”
“Forever & One”
“I Want Out”
“Falling To Pieces”
“A Tale That Wasn’t Right”

We aren’t one of those bands who like to celebrate themselves, we just want to say ‘thank you’ in our own special way to all of you who have followed us through the past 25 years – to us, this album stands for an official celebration.

It was a big challenge & great experience and we had a lot of fun recording our most important tracks in an entirely new ‘outfit’ and with new arrangements – we hope you like them!

Sincerely yours,

Andi, Michael, Markus, Sascha & Dani.”
